How Do We Implement the SDGs at the NGO Te Protejo?

In September 2015, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This action plan establishes a series of global goals focused on people, the planet, and prosperity, with the aim of strengthening universal peace and ensuring access to justice. Each of these goals includes specific targets to be achieved by 2030.

The Member States of the United Nations adopted this resolution, recognizing that the eradication of poverty is the greatest challenge facing the world today and that, without addressing it, it is not possible to achieve sustainable development. In this context, governments, the private sector, and civil society are invited to promote concrete actions that contribute to the achievement of these goals.

The 2030 Agenda includes 17 integrated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), broken down into 169 targets that cover three fundamental dimensions of sustainable development: the economy, society, and the environment.

At Te Protejo, we believe that contributing to the well-being of all beings inhabiting the planet is fundamental to the work we do as an organization. For this reason, we have incorporated into our areas of focus a commitment to working toward the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

Goal 5: Gender Equality

“Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.” Reducing the gender gap in all areas is crucial to reducing and eliminating the legislative, social, and discriminatory barriers that girls and women face on a daily basis. Ensuring equal opportunities is essential to building a more empathetic, respectful, and sustainable society, where all people can thrive on equal terms, regardless of their gender. For Te Protejo, recognizing the role and importance of girls and women in society is significant. As an organization composed primarily of women, this commitment takes on even greater relevance and is part of our mission within the community.

For this reason, at the organizational level, we have an internal gender policy, and our team of female directors has received ongoing training on topics related to feminism and gender equality, with the goal of deepening their understanding of these issues.

We also include news articles, educational graphics, historical events, and other content related to this topic in our editorial lineup. In addition, we partner with organizations specializing in gender equality to disseminate reliable information and help raise awareness in the community.

Goal 12: Responsible Production and Consumption

“Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.” Excessive consumption and production have a significant impact not only on the global economy but also on the constant use of natural resources. While these processes can lead to socioeconomic progress, they also cause environmental degradation and, in general, have negative effects on the planet. Promoting responsible and environmentally friendly consumption is a mission to which Te Protejo has been committed since its inception. To help achieve this goal, we have incorporated news articles, educational graphics, historical events, and a variety of content on responsible consumption and sustainable practices into our editorial lineup.

Furthermore, this commitment is reflected in the implementation of projects both externally and internally, and it serves as one of the cornerstones of our community engagement department’s work.

Externally, as an organization, we are committed to helping various brands improve their production processes through cruelty-free and vegan certification in Brazil, in conjunction with our work with V-Label. This enables brands to adopt practices that are more responsible and mindful of other sentient beings and the environment.

Goal 13: Climate Action

“Take urgent action to combat climate change and its effects.” We are currently facing a climate crisis that has reached alarming levels. Greenhouse gas emissions, the excessive exploitation of natural resources, environmental disasters, and pollution have created a climate emergency that is becoming increasingly unsustainable. As an organization that advocates for animals and the environment, recognizing the climate crisis and its effects is essential to our work. In this context, Te Protejo seeks to raise awareness about global warming through a clear and relatable message, using news articles, educational graphics, notable dates, and other content related to this topic.

We also promote a vegan diet both at our events and as part of our community’s lifestyle. This type of diet not only prevents harm to animals but also helps reduce our carbon footprint and environmental impact.

Similarly, as part of our editorial policy, we highlight brands certified as vegan in the listings on our website, in addition to encouraging other companies to obtain this certification through our work with V-Label. Goal 17: Partnerships to Achieve the Goals

“Revitalizing the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.” For the Sustainable Development Goals to be achieved, it is necessary to establish partnerships and shared goals that will enable these commitments to be replicated in different sectors of society. It is in this context that the goal “Partnerships for the Goals” emerges, recognizing that global transformation is achieved through cooperation.

Collaborative work is essential for bringing about meaningful change. In line with this SDG, Te Protejo has initiated various partnerships with organizations and entities in the countries where we operate, with the goal of promoting strategies and positive actions for nature, animals, and people.

First, we have established collaborative relationships with local suppliers and startups. We have also developed a network with more than 30 organizations, such as Fundación Basura, which focuses on environmental protection; Fundación Veg, Aquatic Animal Alliance, Mercy For Animals, and ARBA, which are dedicated to animal advocacy and promoting a life free from animal cruelty; and we have also collaborated with organizations such as Todo Mejora and Grow, which work on inclusion and gender equality, among others.

In turn, at Te Protejo, we have built a network of certified brands in the six countries where we operate: Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, and Brazil. These brands and companies receive various benefits, such as content collaboration or barter arrangements in the case of startups that lack the funding to work with us. In fact, collaborative work and barter arrangements account for nearly 50% of our activities as an organization.

In addition, we also participate in outreach activities such as talks, workshops, and activities at educational institutions or other venues that allow us to connect with the community.
