Jumbo, Preunic, and Salcobrand Top the 2024 Ranking of Cruelty-Free Retailers in Chile

We have released the second edition of our ranking of cruelty-free retail outlets in the country, with the goal of identifying the locations with the greatest number of brands and products certified as cruelty-free in Chile.

For the second consecutive year, the Te Protejo team analyzed stores, pharmacies, supermarkets, and retailers nationwide to assess the availability of products certified as cruelty-free. The study included 10 retail locations and was conducted with the support of the organization’s volunteers.

Among the key findings, Jumbo, Preunic, and Salcobrand stand out as the retailers with the largest selection of cruelty-free brands, offering 61, 59, and 54 brands, respectively. In this edition, Preunic remains a leader, just as it did last year, solidifying its position as a benchmark for conscious consumers in the country.

In addition, these retail outlets also carry the largest number of domestic brands bearing Te Protejo’s “Not Tested on Animals” seal. However, the ranking changes when product availability is analyzed: DBS Beauty Store leads with 207 subcategories, followed by Jumbo and Preunic, both with 194.

“Ever since Te Protejo was founded, we have seen the need among cosmetics consumers for options that are environmentally and animal-friendly. Having a supermarket, a retailer, and a pharmacy leading the way in making these types of products available reaffirms that the national cosmetics market has moved toward a more conscious product offering,” said Camila Cortínez, the organization’s Executive Director.

These results reflect a sustained trend: the cruelty-free cosmetics market has grown by 186% over the past 10 years. In this context, the passage of Law 21.646, which bans animal testing for cosmetics, places Chile among the more than 45 countries that have enacted legislation on this issue.

“In Chile, the growing availability of cruelty-free products reflects a global trend toward more conscious and environmentally friendly consumption.

“However, in a growing market, certification remains the only reliable tool for ensuring that a brand is truly cruelty-free. Beyond mere claims, official seals allow consumers to make informed decisions, with the peace of mind that they are choosing products that meet verifiable standards,” said Yolanda López, Corporate Director of Te Protejo.

Among other findings, the report highlights that the category with the widest selection of cruelty-free products in the country is body care. In addition, the PETA seal continues to have the strongest presence in the domestic market, increasing from 50 to 78 certified brands—mostly imported—followed by the Te Protejo seal, with 46 certified brands. The ranking of cruelty-free retail outlets included Jumbo, Unimarc, Beauty Plus, Preunic, Farmacias Knop, Palumbo, DBS Beauty Store, Ecotienda Natural, Salcobrand, and Sokobox.

Update: In August 2025, PETA modified the scope of its certification program, limiting it solely to brands with operations in countries where the organization has a direct presence. As a result, brands certified by PETA in countries where the organization no longer operates have been excluded from the Te Protejo lists. For more information see the article.
