71% of Peruvians oppose animal testing in the cosmetics industry

A survey conducted by Te Protejo in collaboration with IPSOS revealed how Peruvians perceive the cosmetics industry and their stance on the use of animals in experiments.

In line with Te Protejo’s mission to promote a beauty industry that respects animals and the environment, the study “Perceptions of the Cosmetics Industry in Peru” revealed compelling results: 71% of respondents said they disagreed with animal testing, while 56% would support the creation of laws banning these practices in the country.

The survey also revealed other interesting findings about consumers: 95% use cosmetics regularly, and price is the main factor in their purchasing decisions. “With these results, we can confirm that we have the public’s support to move forward with the bill that seeks to ban animal testing in Peru’s cosmetics industry, making the country the 46th in the world to advance this legislation and the seventh in Latin America,” said Nicole Valdebenito, Advocacy Director at Te Protejo.

Bill No. 07688/2023-CR seeks to amend Law No. 30407 on animal protection and welfare and Law No. 29459 on pharmaceutical products, medical devices, and health products, with the aim of prohibiting the use of animals in cosmetic testing in Peru. The bill was introduced in April 2024 by Congressman Guido Bellido and is supported by government and civil society organizations.

“This initiative could place Peru at the forefront of the region in terms of animal rights legislation and represent a major step forward for the local cosmetics industry. The bill was already approved by the Agriculture Committee in September of last year and, with feedback from key stakeholders in the country, is ready to be debated by Congress,” said Iselda Livoni, president of ARBA.

This initiative is supported by the “También Sienten” campaign, which has already gathered more than 3,500 signatures from the public, helping to raise awareness about the reality faced by animals used in safety and toxicology testing in the cosmetics industry.
